Taking Up Space
Taking Up Space was on view at the Brea Gallery from January 30th - March 26th, 2021. This deeply personal and intimate group show featured a diverse group of women artists who share their stories, cultures, and perspectives through their artistic practice. Staged to supplement rather than negate the typically male-dominated exhibitions of the past, this show recognized how vital diversity and representation are in galleries and museums, as it is in the world at large. This exhibit sought to highlight the struggles and strengths of these artists, offering visitors the opportunity to gain new insights into experiences outside their own.
Artists: Chloe Allred, Catalina Bellizzi-Itiola, Hazel Choo, Alexandra Carter, Lanise Howard,
Carmen Mardonez, Elisa Ortega Montilla, Juliana Rico, Jacqueline Valenzuela, and Diane Williams
The exhibit was also presented virtually in a variety of ways. Online visitors can still explore the exhibition through a 3D rendered click thru tour on ArtSteps and watch the Zoom Artist Panel via the Brea Gallery website, or visit the Brea Gallery Instagram to see all of the images and video of the exhibit, the artist Instagram Takeover weekends, and saved IG Live Curator Tours.
